This is the time of year when gardens everywhere are overflowing with summer produce and the farmers' markets have abundant displays of all types of tomatoes, heirlooms, vegetables, freshly picked greens and corn as fresh as you will ever get. It's that time of year when simplicity makes the most sense


Salads, like sandwiches, have few rules. Meeting the single criterion for the latter simply requires putting one or more ingredients between bread. For the former, if your edibles can be tossed, mixed, chopped or layered, go ahead and call the result a salad.
